To accompany the current exhibition ANNEMIRL BAUER. BRUCH IST IN DER WELT, monthly readings are held that invite visitors to engage in a literary exploration of the themes of feminism, women as artists, motherhood, life under dictatorships, and freedom of expression.
The exhibition Annemirl Bauer. A Rupture in the World presents a comprehensive retrospective of a critical artist (1939–1989) from the GDR who was long excluded from the canon of art history. Her works bear witness to an uncompromising observer who continually advocated for social justice, rebelled against the repression of SED policies, and shed light on the GDR art system, state repression, and female resistance.
In reference to the artistic work of Annemirl Bauer, renowned authors explore key themes of the exhibition in their books, expanding upon them through literature and discourse.
The moderated readings take place at Caféber HEDWIG or in the lobby of DAS MINSK.
The events are held in German.

“You can’t say anything anymore these days!” Hardly any other phrase defines the debates of our time as much as this one. Public debates are becoming increasingly heated, not least because of social media and its algorithmic mechanisms. At the same time, freedom of expression has been noticeably restricted in recent years by new laws and regulations, including those that extend to online space. Statements that were still permissible in 2015 may now be punishable by law. Where does the line between free speech and a criminal statement lie today?
How much criticism must a democratic society tolerate, and at what point do hurtful or derogatory remarks become unacceptable, particularly for public figures? Ronen Steinke, a lawyer with a Ph.D., author, and journalist, explores these questions in his latest book Meinungsfreiheit (Freedom of Expression), which examines one of the central issues of our democracy: How free is public speech really, and where are its limits?
Who decides what constitutes “hate speech and incitement”? It is often the courts that must determine which statements are still protected by freedom of speech and which are punishable by law.
Steinke’s book is a committed plea for greater transparency and a passionate appeal to embrace a culture of debate—as long as it is conducted without violence. In doing so, he combines legal expertise with sociopolitical analysis.
Together with cultural journalist Christine Watty, Ronen Steinke will discuss the challenges and opportunities of public discourse in the 21st century and invite the audience to an engaging exchange on the future of free speech.
