The themed guided tour HerStory: Female Perspectives in Art from the GDR focuses specifically on female artists, their biographies, and aspects of their artistic lives in the GDR. The tour provides in-depth insight into the work of Cornelia Schleime, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt, Gudrun Brüne, Gabriele Stötzer, Nuria Quevedo, and Erika Stürmer-Alex.
The focus is on the works themselves, which range from classical painting to progressive media such as film and mail art, as well as the specific challenges that these artists faced in the period before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The tour explores how these women had to find their own paths as artists to assert themselves in an art scene characterized by state control and social expectations.
What techniques and visual languages were developed to communicate their subjects? How did the artists move between conformity and opposition? And how were their works received after the end of the GDR?
The artists’ engagement with social and political issues, feminist perspectives, and their reflection on GDR society make their work an important part of art history.
