Music and soundscapes play a role in many of Noah Davis' works. What does the piece that the conductor in The Conductor (2014) directs for an invisible orchestra sound like? What soundscape is evoked by the work 1975 (8) (2013), in which a boy dives headlong into the cool waters of an outdoor pool? The sound dimension of DAS MINSK and the paintings by Noah Davis will be explored in a modular series of workshops.
The physical materials of DAS MINSK — such as walls, floors, and banisters — will be transformed into musical instruments. DAS MINSK is made to resound through its interaction with self-fashioned sound material made from mallets and ear trumpets. Guided by the question of what sounds the building and Noah Davis' paintings evoke, they will develop, record, and present their own sound compositions.
Using recording equipment, a mixing console, and active speakers, participants will experiment, improvise, loop, and compose. The workshop is designed for art and music enthusiasts of all ages; a minimum age of 8 years is recommended. No previous knowledge is required.
The workshop series consists of three modules, each of which is offered twice a month. Each module is self-contained and can be attended individually or in combination with the others. By presenting confirmation of a previously booked module, additional modules can be booked without an additional ticket to the museum.

LISTENING SESSION
A live musical set by “Selbstgebaute Musik”
December 14, 2024, 3 PM
Final presentation of the workshop series “THE SOUND OF DAS MINSK & OF NOAH DAVIS’ WORKS
What does it mean to listen to a painting? What sounds might be hidden there and what sounds lie dormant in DAS MINSK?
In a six-part workshop, the participants explored together with the team from “Selbstgebaute Musik” how the works of Noah Davis and their exhibition location at DAS MINSK can be translated into sonic concepts and moods.
The participants found a variety of approaches to music:
Walls, banisters and doors became musical instruments whose sounds were processed into their own tracks. Letters from “NOAH DAVIS” and “DAS MINSK” were transformed into sounds and chords. They also transformed color gradients from Noah Davis' paintings into computer-generated melodies with the help of color reading tools.
In a further collaboration with the University of Potsdam students on the master's course “Global Resonances in Brandenburg” collected sound samples in the building and in the exhibition and recorded their auditory impressions in text fragments.
They experimented, looped and composed with recording devices, mixing consoles and sound motors. The result is a sound performance that makes the exhibition and DAS MINSK resound and can be experienced acoustically.
The result can be experienced live on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 3 pm in the foyer of DAS MINSK presented by the team from “Selbstgebaute Musik.”
