The exhibition Annemirl Bauer: A Rupture in the World is dedicated to the artist’s multifaceted work. As a nonconformist artist in the GDR, she explored social injustices, traditional gender roles, and questions of freedom and self-determination.

This thematic tour follows the trail of the women who shaped, supported, and inspired Annemirl Bauer. Who were her role models, companions, and allies? Which networks, friendships, and feminist discourses found their way into her work?

Taking the artist’s works as its starting point, the tour highlights connections and elective affinities: to her mother, the artist Tina Bauer-Pezellen; to fellow activists such as the civil rights campaigner Bärbel Bohley and the pioneering feminist linguist Luise F. Pusch; and to her daughter, Amrei Bauer.

The tour highlights feminist debates outside the GDR that were also important  to Annemirl Bauer. Many of the topics covered in the West German women’s magazine Emma, which was first published in 1977, addressed issues that shaped her artistic work and reflected the limits of women’s self-determination in both East and West.

The thematic tour with Birgit Szepanski (artist and guide) explores how Annemirl Bauer translated questions of gender equality into her art and why her works remain as relevant today as ever.
