With the exhibition Annemirl Bauer: A Rupture in the World, DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam offers an in-depth overview into the multifaceted work of Annemirl Bauer (1939– 1989). Some 150 paintings, drawings, collages, and objects spanning over three decades of her artistic practice are on view. In her works, Annemirl Bauer explores prescribed roles and gender relations within patriarchal power structures, self-empowerment, interpersonal relations, human rights, environmental destruction, the Wall, restrictive border policies, and state oppression.

In 1988, on one of her last trips to southern Europe, the artist Annemirl Bauer made the collaged brush drawing Women Discussing in Arles. In this work, several women, depicted in black ink against a bright blue sky, put their heads together. Intertwined like sisters, they gesticulate while speaking passionately with one another. Annemirl Bauer framed the group with a dove of peace, multiple sketches of southern French landscapes, and ephemera from her stay in Arles.

The title of the study day Women Discussing in Potsdam, which takes place as part of the retrospective at DAS MINSK, is a variation of the drawing’s title. Through selected works, scholars offer a comprehensive view of the artist’s oeuvre and present current research approaches to her practice.
