Germany, 2021
90 Minutes
The monobloc chair is the most commercially successful piece of furniture of all times and can be found across the world. Over the past years, Oscar Murillo has integrated these well-known plastic chairs into his practice as scenographic elements, supports for art works and seating for visitors.
The universal character and global presence of the chairs, which resonates with the inclusivity and reach of Murillo’s practice, is explored by Grimme Prize winning director Hauke Wendler in his film Monobloc. The documentary traces the distribution of the chairs between the continents from Europe to North America, Brazil to India, through to Uganda. The film meditates on the history and future of globalization and the ecological implications of capitalist consumption, without losing sight of the capacity of the chairs to build communities worldwide.
The film will be screened at the Filmmuseum Potsdam following an introduction to the exhibition “Oscar Murillo: Collective Osmosis” by curator Daniel Milnes.
In cooperation with the Filmmuseum Potsdam.
