Monthly readings will take place to accompany the current exhibition IN DIALOGUE — Hasso Plattner Collection: Art from the GDR, inviting visitors to engage in a literary examination of the GDR and its critical resonance in the present day.

Building upon the exhibition’s idea of bringing works by GDR artists into  dialogue in order to illuminate different perspectives, authors will offer insights from literature, explore new narratives, and place the stories about the GDR in a contemporary context.

Renowned authors such as Charlotte Gneuß, Carolin Würfel, Annett Gröschner, Peggy Mädler, Wenke Seemann, Paula Fürstenberg, and Peggy Kurka present their books in a variety of ways.

The readings, moderated by Maria-Christina Piwowarski, take place once a month in Café Hedwig or in the foyer of DAS MINSK. The event ticket includes a visit to the exhibition from 5 PM. The events are in German.

Dates for June and July 2025 will follow. Further information will be announced shortly.

Annett Gröschner, Peggy Mädler, Wenke Seemann: Drei ostdeutsche Frauen betrinken sich und gründen den idealen Staat, 2024

A scenic reading performance

Three friends, a kitchen table, night beyond the windows: Annett Gröschner, Peggy Mädler, and Wenke Seemann converse. They talk about themselves as “East German women”, whatever that pigeonhole means, about the happiness of crooked lives, about the present and its constantly intruding past. They drink, laugh, and confront fragments of memory and contradiction, discussing the intricacy of cultural imprints and the ideals that have over the years become foreign.
(Hanser Publishers)

In a literary trialogue, Annett Gröschner, Peggy Mädler, and Wenke Seemann question their own GDR-shaped identity in a self-ironic and grippingly clever way. Clichés are humorously questioned, experiences are exchanged, and the potentials of the present and future explored.

It is about remembering and reinventing oneself, fostering an affectionate rather than nostalgic view of the former GDR and present-day East Germany.

The three authors present their book with the suggestive title in the foyer of DAS MINSK in a scenic reading performance; with pictures, music, and a punch based on the recipe in the book.

“A first-class mixture of anecdotes, analysis, and alcohol. And the big question of whether we want to live the way we should. Listen to these women!” (Katja Oskamp)
