For Soft Power Johanna Unzueta has created a site-specific work spanning three columns within the exhibition space, for which she has threaded lengths of uncut shoelaces across them (Spiral, Composition 1:1, 2024). The different threads are wrapped around nails and interlaced and intuitively woven by Unzueta, with the patterns influenced by the time she spent weaving with Mapuche women in rural southern Chile in 1999.
In a workshop, the artist Johanna Unzueta will introduce the techniques and tools of her weaving. Together with the participants, she will experiment with how geometric compositions are created on spatial objects. The focus will be on the basic use of textiles, design ideas, and the discovery of new concepts and functions of a weaving practice. The joint exercise provides an insight into the artistic approach and working practice of Johanna Unzueta, who is exhibiting several works in the exhibition Soft Power.
The workshop at DAS MINSK will be led by Johanna Unzueta and her colleague Carolina Redondo.
The workshop is also suitable for young people aged 12 and over.
