Art in Motion: The Jumping Horse

Workshop for children ages 5 and up

Sat & Sun, November 28–29, 2026
BOTH DAYS AT 11:00 AM / 12:30 PM / 2 PM / 3:30 PM

How does an image become a toy? Can art hop, wobble, and move?

Playfulness and experimentation also occupy a special place in Annemirl Bauer’s practice. Trained in ceramics and toy design at the School of Applied Arts in Sonneberg, the artist worked for a time as a toy designer before turning to the visual arts. Toys are just as much a part of her estate as her imaginative paintings.

This family workshop focuses on the playful aspect of Bauer’s work for the Ice Festival. One source of inspiration is her painting Elli on the Horse (1981), in which fantasy and reality merge in a unique way. Like her paintings, the figures made in the workshop can be extraordinary: fantastical creatures with colorful wings or shimmering winter coats. Using scissors, pens, cardboard, and movable joints, participants bring the figures to life.

Participants can then take the toys they design home with them.
