A Bright Future in Potsdam? Construction-related Art in the GDR in the Here and Now  Reserve your seat here

Lecture by Martin Maleschka

Thursday, February 5, 2025, 7 PM

The expression Frohe Zukunft (Happy Future) is an expression that symbolized a new beginning in the GDR and was sometimes used to name entire new housing estates. The transformation the GDR’s architectural heritage of continues, whether intentionally covered up, legislatively restricted, or deliberately demolished. The Palace of the Republic, one of the most famous and significant Gesamtkunstbauwerk of post-war architectural modernism in the East, is now a thing of the past. The ongoing transformation of Potsdam’s historic center is currently underway. What will remain of what was once a promising future? How do we deal with the architectural heritage of the GDR today? What might future-oriented projects look like? And have they already been successfully implemented?
These questions will be addressed in Martin Maleschka’s illustrated lecture to mark the close of the exhibition Wohnkomplex: Art and Life in Plattenbau.

The lecture will take place at Café Hedwig.
Admission is free. Please purchase a ticket if you would like to visit the exhibition beforehand.
