Social Knit Work Berlin, 2024, textile Intervention

May 26, 2024, 3–6 pm
June 9, 2024, 3–6 pm
June 16, 2024, from 11 am

To accompany the current exhibition Soft Power, part of the exterior façade of DAS MINSK will be transformed into a temporary textile form with colorful, hanging crocheted chains of woolen air stitches.

The project is an invitation to join the participants of Social Knit Work Berlin in crocheting 5000 air stitch chains. Weather permitting, the collective crocheting will take place outdoors. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the current exhibition Soft Power. The crocheting will be done with partly reused wool. Air stitch chains will be created in different colors and thicknesses. As they are easy to make, people of all ages and without any special handicraft skills can participate. Instructions are available in the foyer. The abundance of air stitch chains, designed from simple individual pieces, creates an expansive, colorful textile intervention for DAS MINSK.

On the Sunday of the campaign, June 16, 2024, the textile intervention will finally be attached to DAS MINSK’s exterior façade.

Social Knit Work Berlin is an urban initiative by twelve women, which has been working on playful interventions in public space since 2014. Inspired by the guerrilla knitting movement from the USA, the term “social” in the group’s name refers both to the collaborative production process and to the interaction with the surrounding urban space and its visitors. Unexpected spaces of communication are created, such as a city highway bridge with 900 knitted bridge struts (Color the Bridge, 2018) or 7000 colorful pompoms along the ramp in front of the Palais Populaire, Berlin (Wall of Love, 2019).

Crocheting instructions

It's very simple: Take colored wool and crochet chains 4.50 meter-long with two or three threads of the same color. Knot the ends and wind the crocheted strings into a ball. You can hand in the finished balls at DAS MINSK Kunsthaus on the dates mentioned or bring them to the action day on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
