Paola Malavassi and Jason Moran, curators of I’ve Seen the Wall, decided to develop an exhibition that brings the audience “backstage” to take a closer look at the complexities of politics, racism, and the production and reception of music. I’ve Seen the Wall has music as its core. It is subject matter, motivation, reference, inspiration, source, metaphor, method, and material. The two curators look at it from different angles: Moran brings the perspective of an artist and musician, Malavassi that of an art historian and a music enthusiast—both repeatedly working at the intersection between visual art and music. Together they ask: What is said and what is played? What is amplified and what is muted in society?
